The Morongo Band of Mission Indians broke ground on an expansion project at its casino in southern California on Monday. The Morongo Casino Resort and Spa is gaining a 65,000-square-foot expansion that will allow for the addition of 800 slot machines, more table games, a new bar and other amenities. The project also includes a renovation of existing spaces on the first floor of the facility as well as a new parking structure with 750 spaces. “Morongo has come a long way from the tiny bingo hall we operated on the reservation back in the 1980s,” Chairman Robert Martin said in a press release. “Today, we pen a new chapter in our story as we continue to nurture new opportunities for our people, our community and our region,' Martin said. 'Today, we take a step toward generating another 425 new full-time jobs to add to the more than 2,500 jobs that Morongo already provides.” Work is expected to be complete sometime in 2020 and will generate more than 1,000 construction jobs, according to the tribe. The construction team includes two Native-owned companies -- Sage Mountain Construction and Hal Hayes Construction.
